Falling Behind

According to a 2002 National Assessment of Educational Progress, exams showed that 26 percent of American High School Graduates read below basic levels. It is a fact that the American education system is producing High School Graduates who can not read with proficiency. But it doesn't have to be that way. It can be different if we each learn to look for the signs and to find help when there is trouble. It isn't something for any student to be ashamed of, and it must be shown that this doesn't make them "stupid", a self image that will make fixing any problems more difficult. When caught early on (though these troubles don't always begin in elementary and may develop much later) it is easy to find the problem, fix it, and move into the wonderful world of learning and reading.
